Case IH 17801 (F-520354-31) - ECU – Engine Control Unit (ECU / ECM): ECU internal failure - Safety Management Unit Alarm Group 2 Failure 18 issued
Issue description
Internal plausibility check failure, memory stack error, or calibration error within the Engine Control Module's Safety Management Unit, compromising its own safety monitoring capabilities.
Applies to these machines
4 machines- VESTRUM CVX
- Case IH Austoft 9000 and 9900 Series Sugarcane Harvesters
- Case IH Axial-Flow Combines (e.g., 7240, 7250)
- Machines utilizing the MTA CCM & APH Stage V MR transmission/engine configurations
Check the cause
Check the ECM Power Relay: Ensure the relay is not loose or faulty, which can cause intermittent power drops.
Check the Battery Disconnect Switch: Verify that the battery disconnect switch was not inappropriately disconnected while the ECM was still powered and writing to its non-volatile memory.
Check System Voltage: Test the battery and alternator voltage. Voltage spikes (SRC high) or severe drops during cold starts can cause the ECU to log internal safety management faults.
Check for Parallel Level 1 Errors: Note any other codes present, though the diagnostic procedure for this Level 2/3 internal error is independent of Level 1 errors.
Repair steps
Connect diagnostic tool
Connect the diagnostic service tool (e.g., EST) to the machine's diagnostic port.
Erase fault code
Erase the Level 2/3 error (17801) from the fault code memory.
Cycle power and test
Cycle the machine's power and operate the engine to see if the fault returns.
Evaluate fault return
If the error does NOT reappear, do not replace the ECU. The fault was likely a ghost failure or caused by a temporary voltage/power disconnect anomaly. Erasure of the fault code memory is sufficient.
Replace and program ECU
If the error DOES reappear, the ECU has suffered a hard internal hardware or calibration failure and must be replaced. Note: If it is strictly a dataset/calibration error, contact the Helpdesk to flash a replacement dataset before physical replacement. Replacement ECUs will require programming/calibration with the specific machine's dataset using the CNH Electronic Service Tool (EST) upon installation.
