17809 (F-520358-31) - ECU

Case IH 17809 (F-520358-31) - ECU – Engine Control Unit (ECU): ECU internal failure - Safety Management Unit Alarm Group 3 Failure 1 issued

Issue description

Critical internal hardware or software failure within the control module. The internal Safety Management Unit has detected an anomaly, which is often caused by a corrupted dataset, internal memory failure, or physical damage to the module's internal circuitry.

Applies to these machines

  • VESTRUM CVX
  • Austoft 9900 Sugarcane Harvester
  • A8800 Sugarcane Harvester
  • Farmall Series (40, 45, 50, and 115U Efficient Power Tractors)
  • Axial-Flow Combines (8010 series)

Check the cause

  1. Measure charging stability and battery voltage to rule out voltage spikes or severe drops causing ECU resets.

  2. Verify the integrity of the CAN bus lines, main power supply, and ground circuits to the ECU.

  3. Check the ECU housing for signs of water intrusion, condensation, cracked epoxy, or overheating (often caused by pressure washing).

  4. Connect the Case IH Electronic Service Tool (EST) and attempt to clear the code. If it returns immediately, attempt to reflash/recalibrate the ECU with the proper machine dataset.

Repair steps

  1. Turn off the machine and disconnect the battery

Disconnect the negative terminal first to prevent electrical arcing.

  2. Locate the Engine ECU

Typically mounted on the side of the engine block or in the main electrical compartment, depending on the machine model.

  3. Disconnect the ECU wiring harness connectors

Carefully release the locking levers on the ECU wiring harness connectors and disconnect them.

  4. Remove the faulty module

Remove the mounting bolts securing the ECU to its bracket and remove the faulty module.

  5. Install the replacement ECU

Install the replacement ECU and torque the mounting bolts to OEM specifications.

  6. Reconnect the wiring harnesses

Ensure the locking levers are fully seated and secure.

  7. Reconnect the battery

  8. Flash the new ECU

Connect the Case IH Electronic Service Tool (EST) and flash the new ECU with the correct engine and machine dataset.

  9. Verify the fault code has been cleared

Perform a key cycle and run the machine to verify the fault code has been cleared.

Parts you might need

(2)
  • ECU Module (UCM 12V STD3)

    84589140

Always verify the exact part number against the machine's serial number, as ECU hardware varies by engine tier and configuration.

  • Electronic Engine Module (FPT)

    5802247472

Always verify the exact part number against the machine's serial number, as ECU hardware varies by engine tier and configuration.
