17815 (F-520361-31) - ECU

Case IH 17815 (F-520361-31) - ECU – Engine Control Unit (ECU / ECM): ECU internal failure - Safety Management Unit Alarm Group 3 Failure 19 issued

Issue description

The engine's control module has detected a critical internal hardware or software fault within its own Safety Management Unit. The ECU's internal self-monitoring system has triggered a security/safety alarm, meaning the module can no longer guarantee safe or reliable engine operation.

Applies to these machines

  • VESTRUM CVX
  • Case IH Austoft 9000 Series Sugarcane Harvesters
  • Case IH Austoft 9900 Series Sugarcane Harvesters
  • Machines equipped with the FPT Cursor 11 Diesel Engine

Check the cause

  1. Connect a diagnostic scanning tool (such as the Case IH Electronic Service Tool or Jaltest for FPT engines) to verify if the code is active or a stored historical glitch.

  2. Inspect the ECU power relays, battery connections, and ground straps. Voltage drops, spikes, or a loose ECM power relay can sometimes trigger false internal fault codes.

  3. Verify the integrity of the CAN networks communicating with the ECU (e.g., CAN 2 to the PCM, CAN 4 to the D-NOX module, and CAN 5 used for FPT ECU layer programming) to ensure no short circuits are feeding back into the module.

Repair steps

  1. Disconnect power

Disconnect the machine's battery to protect the electrical systems from voltage spikes during removal.

  2. Remove the faulty ECU

Locate the Engine ECU on the FPT Cursor 11 engine. Carefully disconnect the main wiring harness connectors from the module and unbolt the ECU from its mounting bracket.

  3. Install the new ECU

Mount the replacement ECU and securely reconnect the wiring harnesses.

  4. Reconnect power

    Reconnect the battery terminals.

  5. Program the ECU

A new or remanufactured ECU will be blank or require machine-specific flashing. Use the Case IH diagnostic tool via CAN 5 (FPT ECU layer programming) to flash the correct software for the Austoft 9900 or respective machine.

  6. Configure machine settings

Access the Pro 700 / A8810 monitor in the cab. Navigate to the "Toolbox" > "Engine Settings" and input the required passwords to set the Engine Power Curve (e.g., High Power, Low Power, or Smart).

  7. Clear and test

Clear the 17815 fault code and run the engine to verify the repair.

Parts you might need

(1)
  • Engine Control Unit (ECU) / Engine Control Module (ECM)

    91764687R

Case IH Remanufactured ECU. Fits Case IH Austoft 9000/9900 series and FPT Cursor 11 engines. Note that various software layer part numbers (e.g., 579520010, 579520009) exist depending on the exact machine configuration (STSI01, STSE01, etc.), so the ECU must be programmed by a dealer upon installation.
