17822 (F-520364-11) - ECU

Case IH 17822 (F-520364-11) - ECU – Engine Control Unit (ECU / ECM): ECU internal failure - Safety Management Unit Alarm Group 3 Failure 4 issued

Issue description

The control module's internal safety management system has detected a critical internal hardware or software fault. The ECU has essentially failed its own internal self-check protocol regarding safety monitoring.

Applies to these machines

  • VESTRUM CVX
  • Case IH Austoft 9900 and 9000 Series Sugarcane Harvesters

Check the cause

  1. Check Power and Ground: Verify that the machine's batteries are fully charged. Test all power supply and ground circuits leading to the Engine ECU for voltage drops, shorts, or resistance. Voltage spikes or poor grounds can trigger internal safety alarms.

  2. Inspect Connectors: Disconnect the ECU harnesses and inspect the pins for corrosion, moisture ingress, or bent terminals.

  3. Clear and Retest: Use a diagnostic tool (such as the Case IH Electronic Service Tool or Jaltest for FPT engines) to clear the fault code memory. Cycle the key. If the code 17822 immediately returns as 'Active,' the ECU has suffered a permanent internal failure and cannot be repaired in the field.

Repair steps

  1. Disconnect power

Turn off the ignition and disconnect the main battery negative terminal to prevent electrical arcing.

  2. Locate the ECU

Locate the Engine ECU mounted on or near the FPT Cursor 11 engine block.

  3. Disconnect harnesses

Carefully release the locking levers on the ECU wiring harness connectors and unplug them.

  4. Remove the ECU

Remove the mounting bolts securing the ECU to its bracket and remove the faulty unit.

  5. Install the new ECU

Mount the replacement ECU and tighten the bolts securely to prevent vibration damage.

  6. Reconnect wiring

Reconnect the wiring harnesses, ensuring the locking levers are fully seated and clicked into place.

  7. Restore power

    Reconnect the battery negative terminal.

  8. Program and calibrate

A certified Case IH or FPT technician must connect to the machine via the diagnostic port to flash the correct software parameters, copy configurations, and calibrate the module to the specific harvester.
