17829 (F-520368-31) - ECU

Case IH 17829 (F-520368-31) - ECU – Engine Control Module (ECM) / Engine Control Unit (ECU): ECU internal failure - Safety Management Unit Alarm Group 4 Failure 10 issued

Issue description

The internal Safety Management Unit (SMU) within the engine's control module has detected a processing error, a calibration mismatch, or an internal hardware fault. The SMU acts as an internal watchdog; when it detects that the ECU is not processing safety-critical data correctly, it triggers this Level 2/3 alarm.

Applies to these machines

  • VESTRUM CVX
  • Austoft 9900
  • Farmall 40
  • Farmall 45
  • Farmall 50
  • Farmall 55
  • Farmall 60
  • Magnum series
  • Maxxum series

Check the cause

  1. Check battery voltage and alternator output for voltage drops, high resistance in the wiring, or voltage spikes during a cold start.

  2. Inspect the main power and ground pins at the ECU harness for corrosion, moisture, or backed-out pins.

  3. Check if any other sensor or voltage codes were logged at the exact same time, as this error can be triggered by functional dependencies on Level 1 errors.

Repair steps

  1. Connect diagnostic tool

Connect the CNH Electronic Service Tool (EST) to the machine's diagnostic port.

  2. Record and clear codes

Record any parallel fault codes, then clear/erase the fault code memory from the ECU.

  3. Test operation

Cycle the key and operate the machine for a short distance or through a standard operating cycle to see if the code returns.

  4. Evaluate if code returns

If the code does not reappear: Do not replace the ECU. The manufacturer notes that erasure of the fault code memory is sufficient, as it may have been a temporary voltage anomaly or 'ghost failure'.

  5. Reflash ECU

If the code reappears: Check if a newer calibration/software payload is available for the ECU and reflash it.

  6. Replace ECU

If the code persists after a software reflash, the ECU has suffered a permanent internal hardware failure and must be replaced.

Parts you might need

(1)
  • Engine Control Module (ECM) / ECU

Varies strictly by machine model, emissions tier, and Engine Serial Number (ESN) (e.g., base numbers like 55.015.030 with variant codes 759127 or 759128). A replacement ECU must be programmed/flashed with the correct software payload for the specific machine's VIN/PIN using the CNH EST tool, and injector trim codes may need to be rewritten.
