17843 (F-520375-31) - ECU

Case IH 17843 (F-520375-31) - ECU – Engine Control Module (ECM / ECU): ECU internal failure - Safety Management Unit Alarm Group 6 Failure 7 issued

Issue description

The Electronic Control Unit has detected a critical internal fault within its Safety Management Unit (Group 6). The Safety Management Unit monitors functional dependencies and safety-critical operations within the module; when this alarm is triggered, it means the module's internal self-check has failed or was forced into a fault state by a parallel Level 1 error.

Applies to these machines

  • VESTRUM CVX
  • Austoft 9900 series Sugarcane Harvesters
  • Austoft 9000 series Sugarcane Harvesters
  • Axial-Flow Combine 7230
  • Axial-Flow Combine 8230
  • Axial-Flow Combine 9230
  • Magnum tractors
  • Farmall tractors

Check the cause

  1. Connect the CNH Electronic Service Tool (EST) and check for any Level 1 errors that may have been entered in parallel, as these can trigger the Safety Management Unit alarm.

  2. Do not immediately replace the ECU; first perform an erasure of the fault code memory.

  3. Cycle the machine's power and operate the engine to see if the Level 2/3 error (17843) reappears.

Repair steps

  1. Connect the CNH EST to the machine's diagnostic port and document all active and stored fault codes.

  2. Clear the fault code memory completely.

  3. Cycle the ignition key.

If the 17843 fault code does not reappear, the issue was a transient dependency error and no further action or ECU replacement is required.

  4. Check if the 17843 fault code immediately reappears.

If it reappears (hard fault), the Engine ECU has suffered a permanent internal failure and must be replaced.

  5. Disconnect the machine's battery to prevent electrical arcing.

  6. Locate the Engine ECU.

Typically mounted on the side of the FPT engine block.

  7. Carefully release the locking levers on the wiring harness connectors and unplug them from the ECU.

  8. Unbolt the ECU from its mounting bracket and remove it.

  9. Install the replacement ECU and torque the mounting bolts to OEM spec.

  10. Reconnect the wiring harnesses and the battery.

  11. Use the CNH EST to flash the correct engine calibration software to the new ECU and pair it with the machine's CAN bus network.
