Case IH 17854 (F-654-05) - ECU – Engine Control Unit (ECU A-095): Open load error of injector in cylinder 4

The control module has detected an open circuit (a break in the electrical connection or a failed solenoid coil) in the circuit supplying power and ground to the fuel injector for cylinder number 4 (component Y-064).

   Check that the tractor battery power supply has not been connected to an external power supply (like a jump box); if connected, disconnect it and test the system for normal operation.

   Check for any damaged or loose machine grounds and connector pins, and look for debris or water inside the connector terminals.

   Verify that the engine wiring harness is not damaged, chafed, or routed incorrectly.

   Disconnect the engine cylinder harness from the injector valve cover (e.g., connector X-826) and use a multimeter to measure the resistance on the injector cover side.

   Check for continuity between the ECU A-095 connector and the cylinder 4 injector (Y-064) pins to determine if the solenoid coil failed internally or if there is an open circuit/short to ground.

   Safety First

   Stop the engine and let it cool completely before starting work. Do not attempt to start the engine during the service procedures.

   Disconnect Power

   Disconnect the negative battery cable to prevent electrical shorts during the repair.

   Access the Injector

   Remove the necessary engine covers or valve covers to access the fuel injectors and the internal injector harness.

   Repair Wiring

   If the diagnostic tests revealed a broken wire or corroded pin in the harness between the ECU and the injector, repair the wiring using OEM-approved connectors, or replace the injector wiring harness entirely.

   Replace the Injector

   If the wiring tested good but the injector solenoid failed the resistance test: Disconnect the fuel lines and electrical connector from the cylinder 4 injector. Remove the injector hold-down clamp and carefully extract the faulty injector. Clean the injector bore thoroughly. Install the new injector with new O-rings and copper sealing washers. Torque the hold-down clamp and fuel lines to OEM specifications.

   Reassembly & Testing

   Reconnect the negative battery cable. Clear the fault codes using a diagnostic tool, prime the fuel system, and run the engine to verify the fault code 17854 does not return.
