17872 (F-652-03) - ECU

Case IH 17872 (F-652-03) - ECU – Engine Control Unit (ECU): Short circuit error of injector in cylinder 2

Issue description

The engine control system has detected an electrical short circuit (either to ground or to a voltage source) in the circuit operating the fuel injector for the second engine cylinder.

Applies to these machines

  • VESTRUM CVX
  • 240 Series Axial-Flow Combines
  • 7240
  • 8240
  • 9240
  • Farmall series
  • Maxxum series
  • Magnum series
  • Steiger series

Check the cause

  1. Check for related bank codes, such as 3210 (DTC 7116) - 'Injection bank 1 short circuit failure', to determine if the short is affecting all injectors on the same bank.

  2. Visually and physically inspect the wiring harness leading to the cylinder 2 injector (typically the second cylinder from the cooling fan) for chafed wires, melted insulation, or pinched lines.

  3. Test the cylinder 2 injector circuit with a multimeter for continuity to verify if the short is isolated to the wiring harness or if it is internal to the injector solenoid itself.

Repair steps

  1. Power Down

Turn off the machine and disconnect the battery to prevent electrical spikes.

  2. Access the Injector

Remove any engine covers or valve covers necessary to access the fuel injectors on the engine block.

  3. Isolate the Short

Disconnect the electrical connector at the cylinder 2 fuel injector.

  4. Repair Wiring (If Applicable)

If the diagnostic tests indicated a short in the wiring harness, repair the damaged section of the wire or replace the injector wiring harness entirely.

  5. Replace Injector (If Applicable)

If the harness tests good, the short is internal to the injector. Remove the high-pressure fuel line connected to cylinder 2. Remove the injector hold-down clamp and extract the faulty injector.

  6. Install New Parts

Seat the new injector with new O-rings/seals. Reconnect the high-pressure fuel line (it is highly recommended to replace the metal injector line once it has been removed to prevent leaks).

  7. Reassemble and Clear Codes

Reconnect the electrical harness, restore battery power, and use the Case IH Electronic Service Tool (EST) to clear the fault codes and verify the repair.
