Case IH 17873 (F-653-03) - ECU – Engine ECU (Electronic Control Unit): Short circuit error of injector in cylinder 3
Issue description
The control module has detected an electrical short circuit (either to ground or to a voltage source) in the wiring or the internal solenoid of the fuel injector located at cylinder number 3.

Check the cause
Check for accompanying injector short circuit codes (e.g., 3063/DTC 6226 for cylinder 1, or 3071/DTC 6626 for cylinder 2) to rule out a shared wiring harness failure or a bank short.
Visually inspect the engine wire harness leading to the cylinder 3 fuel injector for chafed insulation, pinched wires, or melted connectors.
Disconnect the cylinder 3 injector and use a multimeter to test the harness for continuity and short-to-ground.
Measure the resistance across the cylinder 3 injector's terminals to determine if the internal solenoid is shorted.
Repair steps
Power Down
Turn off the machine, allow the engine to cool, and disconnect the battery to prevent electrical arcing or ECU damage.
Isolate the Fault
Based on the diagnostic checks, determine if the short is in the wiring harness or the injector itself.
Harness Repair (If Applicable)
If a short circuit is indicated in the wiring, repair the damaged section of the wire harness or replace the harness assembly as required by OEM guidelines.
Injector Replacement (If Applicable)
If the injector is internally shorted: Clean the area around cylinder 3, remove the high-pressure fuel line, remove the hold-down clamp/bolt, and carefully extract the faulty injector. Clean the injector bore thoroughly, install the new injector ensuring a new copper sealing washer and new O-rings are used, reinstall the hold-down clamp and high-pressure fuel line, and torque all fittings to OEM specifications.
Reassembly and Clearing Codes
Reconnect the electrical connector to the injector and reconnect the battery. Connect a diagnostic tool to the machine, erase the fault code 17873 (F-653-03) from the ECU memory, and run the engine to verify the repair.
