Case IH 17893 (F-1072-31) - ECU – Engine ECU: Internal ECU failure - Error in the release of the engine escape flap brake
Issue description
The engine control module has detected an internal driver fault or an electrical malfunction preventing the proper release of the engine's exhaust flap brake (decompression brake).
Applies to these machines
3 machines- VESTRUM CVX
- Austoft 9900 Sugar Cane Harvesters
- CR Revelation series combines
Check the cause
Wait at least 2 minutes after shutting off the engine before disconnecting the battery to allow the SCR system purge cycle to complete
Inspect the exhaust flap mechanism downstream of the turbocharger for carbon buildup, binding, or mechanical failure that could cause the actuator to draw excessive current
Test the wiring harness running from the Engine ECU to the exhaust flap actuator for rubbed-through wires, shorts to ground, shorts to power, or open circuits
Test the resistance of the exhaust flap actuator/solenoid to ensure it is within OEM specifications and not shorted internally
Verify that the Engine ECU is receiving proper voltage and has clean, tight ground connections
Repair steps
Power down and disconnect battery
Ensure the machine is powered down and the battery is disconnected (observing the 2-minute SCR purge rule).
Disconnect and inspect ECU harness
Locate the Engine ECU and carefully disconnect the main harness connectors. Inspect the pins on the harness side for corrosion or spread terminals.
Remove faulty ECU
Unbolt and remove the faulty Engine ECU.
Install replacement ECU
Install the replacement Engine ECU and torque the mounting bolts to spec.
Reconnect wiring harnesses
Reconnect the wiring harnesses, ensuring the locking levers are fully seated.
Reconnect battery
Reconnect the battery.
Program new ECU
Connect the EST (Electronic Service Tool) to the machine's diagnostic port. You will need to flash/program the new ECU with the correct software layer for the specific FPT Cursor 11 engine configuration (done via CAN 5 on the ECU).
Clear codes and test
Clear the inactive fault codes and run the engine. Perform an active test of the exhaust flap brake to verify it engages and releases without logging the 17893 code.
Parts you might need
(3)FPT Cursor 11 Engine Control Unit
Exact OEM part numbers vary heavily based on the specific emissions tier of the machine—e.g., Tier 3, Tier 4B, or Stage V. You will need the machine's serial number to order the exact flashed module.
