Case IH 17894 (F-1074-31) - ECU – Engine Control Module (ECM / ECU): ECM internal failure - Engine exhaust flap brake release error only

The ECM has detected an internal logic failure or an implausible electrical condition specifically related to the release circuit of the exhaust flap brake.

   Reboot the system (turn key off, wait for power down, turn back on) to check for a transient logic glitch

   Inspect the exhaust flap actuator physically for binding, heavy soot buildup, or a broken return spring

   Inspect the wiring harness between the ECM and the Engine Exhaust Brake Valve for shorts to battery, shorts to ground, or open circuits

   Test the exhaust brake relay (often designated as Main Relay 4)

   Use a diagnostic scanner (CNH Electronic Service Tool or Jaltest) to perform an active test on the throttle valve electric actuator

   Verify the code

   Perform a key cycle to see if the code remains active. If it clears, monitor the machine. If it returns, proceed to physical inspection.

   Test the actuator

   Disconnect the exhaust flap actuator. Apply the specified voltage to the actuator to ensure the motor operates smoothly and the flap opens/closes without binding.

   Replace mechanical components

   If the actuator is seized, or if the external return spring is broken, replace the exhaust brake valve assembly or the spring.

   Test the circuit

   Pin out the wiring harness from the ECM to the exhaust flap actuator. Repair any chafed wires or corroded pins that could be causing a short, which sometimes tricks the ECM into logging an internal failure.

   Address the ECM

   If the wiring is perfectly intact, the relay functions, and the actuator is brand new but the code persists, the ECM itself has suffered a genuine internal hardware failure on that specific driver circuit. The ECM will need to be flashed with updated firmware by a dealer or physically replaced and reprogrammed.
