Case IH 17899 (F-3509-03) - ECU – Engine ECU (Electronic Control Unit): Overvoltage failure of power supply 1 of the 5-volt sensor from the ECU
Issue description
The engine control module is detecting a voltage significantly higher than the expected 5.0 volts on its #1 sensor reference voltage circuit. This is typically caused by a short to a higher voltage source (such as 12V or 24V battery power) in the wiring harness, or an internal short within one of the sensors sharing this 5V supply circuit.

Check the cause
Visually inspect the engine wiring harness connecting the ECU to the engine sensors for rubbed-through insulation, pinched wires, or melted loom that could cause the 5V reference wire to short against a 12V/24V power wire.
Perform a sensor isolation test: Disconnect the 5V engine sensors one at a time while monitoring the circuit voltage or active fault codes. If voltage returns to 5V or the code goes inactive when a specific sensor is unplugged, that sensor is internally shorted.
Disconnect the ECU harness and check the pins for the 5V supply 1 circuit for corrosion, water intrusion, or bent pins which can bridge circuits.
If all sensors are unplugged and the wiring harness tests completely free of shorts to battery voltage, check the ECU itself for an internal failure on the 5V driver.
Repair steps
Disconnect Power
Turn off the battery disconnect switch before unplugging the ECU or repairing the harness.
Repair Wiring
If a short to power was found in the harness, cut out the damaged section of wiring and solder/heat-shrink a new section of wire, ensuring it is routed away from high-heat or high-vibration areas.
Replace Sensor
If the isolation test revealed a shorted sensor, remove the faulty sensor, clean the mounting port, and install the replacement sensor. Reconnect the harness.
Replace ECU
If the ECU is deemed internally faulty, remove the mounting hardware and harness connectors. Install the new or remanufactured ECU. Note: A new ECU will require dealer programming/flashing with the correct machine software and engine calibration files.
Clear Codes
Reconnect battery power, turn the key on, and use a diagnostic tool to clear the inactive 17899 (F-3509-03) fault code. Run the engine to verify the code does not return.
