Case IH 17910 (F-3512-06) - ECU – Engine Control Module (ECM): ECM 5 volt sensor supply 4 high side output driver over temperature failure

Issue description

The Engine Control Module (ECM) provides a 5-volt reference signal to various engine and cab sensors. This code indicates that the internal driver inside the ECM responsible for Sensor Supply 4 has overheated, almost always caused by excessive current draw on the circuit due to a short to ground in the wiring harness or an internally shorted sensor.

Check the cause

  1. Identify the sensors on Supply 4 (often the Accelerator Pedal Position Sensor) using the machine's wiring schematic

  2. Inspect the wiring harness connecting the ECM to the sensors on Supply 4 for chafing, rubbing, or pinched wires causing a short to ground

  3. Disconnect the sensors on the circuit, turn the key ON, and check if the 5V reference returns to isolate an internally shorted sensor

  4. Check the ECM harness connectors for moisture, corrosion, or bent pins bridging the 5V supply to ground

  5. Verify the machine's battery voltage and ECM power/ground supplies are within specification

Repair steps

  1. Disconnect Power

    Turn off the machine and disconnect the battery negative terminal before repairing wiring or replacing modules.

  2. Repair Wiring

    If a short to ground was found in the harness during diagnostics, repair the damaged wire using OEM-approved splicing techniques and heat-shrink tubing. Reroute the harness away from sharp edges or heat sources.

  3. Replace Sensor

    If disconnecting a sensor cleared the short, replace the faulty sensor (e.g., Accelerator Pedal Position Sensor). Reconnect the harness and verify the 5V supply remains stable.

  4. Replace the ECM

    If the wiring harness is completely isolated and tests good, but the ECM still fails to output 5V on circuit 4 or the driver remains in an over-temperature state, the ECM's internal driver is permanently damaged and the ECM must be replaced and flashed/programmed by an authorized Case IH dealer.

  5. Clear Codes

    Reconnect the battery, turn the key ON, and use a diagnostic tool (like CNH EST) to clear the inactive fault codes and verify the repair.
