17914 (F-5466-16) - ECU

Case IH 17914 (F-5466-16) - ECU – Engine ECU: Diesel Particulate Filter (DPF) is overloaded (Level 2)

Issue description

The DPF differential pressure sensor has detected that the flow resistance across the particulate filter is too high, meaning the filter is severely plugged with soot or ash. Normal automatic DPF regeneration cannot be executed.

Applies to these machines

  • VESTRUM CVX
  • Farmall 95A
  • Farmall 105A
  • Farmall 115A
  • Farmall 105C
  • Farmall 115C
  • Maxxum
  • Puma

Check the cause

  1. Inspect the differential pressure sensor on the filter for a gain failure, defective signal, or a short circuit/open wire in the sensor's internal wiring harness.

  2. Check the presence and physical condition of the DOC (Diesel Oxidation Catalyst). Mechanically clean the OxiCat inlet if necessary and check the exhaust for physical restrictions.

  3. Verify that the temperature sensors located before the DOC and before the DPF are measuring correctly. If the DPF cannot reach the required temperature (around 550°C - 600°C), regeneration will fail.

  4. Check if black smoke is visible at the exhaust pipe, which would indicate a cracked, breached, or dismounted particulate filter.

Repair steps

  1. Attempt a Service Regeneration

Connect a service diagnostic tester and attempt to perform a forced 'Service Regeneration' to reduce the soot mass in the filter.

  2. Remove the DPF

If the filter is too plugged with ash or service regeneration fails, remove the tractor hood, air intake components, and heat shields. Carefully disconnect the DPF from the exhaust lines, and unplug the differential pressure and temperature sensors. Mark the orientation of the DPF sections, separate them, and remove the unit.

  3. Clean or Replace

Have the DPF mechanically cleaned (ash removal) by a specialized service, or install a new DPF.

  4. Reinstallation

Reinstall the DPF following the reverse process. Ensure proper orientation and adhere to strict torque specifications for all exhaust clamps and connections to prevent leaks.

  5. System Reset

After a successful regeneration or filter replacement, use the service tester to reset the DPF service interval timer/counter in the ECU.
