17921 (F-520379-11) - ECU

Case IH 17921 (F-520379-11) - ECU – Engine Control Module (ECM / ECU): ECM internal failure - Safety Management Unit Alarm Group 2 Failure 30 issued

Issue description

The Engine Control Module (ECM) has detected a critical internal hardware or software malfunction specifically within its Safety Management Unit (SMU). The SMU is responsible for monitoring critical operational parameters to prevent catastrophic engine or machine damage, and a failure here means the module can no longer guarantee safe operation.

Applies to these machines

  • VESTRUM CVX
  • Case IH Austoft 9000 and 9900 Series Sugarcane Harvesters
  • Machines equipped with FPT Cursor 11 engines
  • Case IH / CNH equipment utilizing the MTA CCM & APH STAGE V MR on-board diagnostics architecture

Check the cause

  1. Check the main power and ground circuits feeding the ECM for voltage drops, electrical spikes, or poor grounding.

  2. Disconnect the ECM harnesses and inspect the pins for moisture, corrosion, or pushed-out pins.

  3. Clear the fault code using the Case IH Electronic Service Tool (EST) and cycle the ignition to see if it returns as a hard fault.

  4. Check the CNH eTIM system for available software updates or reflashes that patch known Safety Management Unit logic errors.

Repair steps

  1. Turn off the machine and disconnect the negative battery terminal to prevent electrical arcing.

  2. Locate the ECM on the engine block or chassis mounting bracket.

  3. Carefully release the locking levers on the wiring harness connectors and unplug them from the ECM.

  4. Remove the mounting bolts securing the ECM and remove the faulty unit.

  5. Install the new or remanufactured ECM and tighten the mounting hardware.

  6. Reconnect the wiring harnesses, ensuring the locking levers are fully seated and secure.

  7. Reconnect the negative battery terminal.

  8. Connect the Case IH EST (Electronic Service Tool) to the machine's diagnostic port and flash the ECM with the correct software payload and calibration files specific to the machine's VIN/PIN and engine configuration.

The new ECM will be blank or in a base state.

  9. Perform any required injector coding or ECU learning routines as prompted by the EST.

  10. Clear all historical fault codes and run the engine to verify the 17921 code does not return.
