Case IH 17937 (F-522003-31) - ECU – Engine Control Unit (ECU): Short to ground at the actuator power stage of the DEF/AdBlue return line heater

The electrical circuit controlling the heating element inside the DEF (Diesel Exhaust Fluid) return line has shorted to ground, or the ECU driver responsible for powering it has detected excessive current draw indicative of a short.

   Inspect the wiring harness leading to the DEF return line heater for chafing, melting, or rubbing against the chassis (most common cause of a short to ground).

   Disconnect the DEF return line heater electrical connector and check for water intrusion, corrosion, or bent pins.

   Use a multimeter to measure the resistance of the DEF return line heating element. Check for continuity between the heater power pin and a known good chassis ground to verify if the heater element has failed and shorted internally.

   With the line disconnected, turn the key ON and check if the short-to-ground code changes to an 'open circuit' code. If the short to ground persists, the short is in the main wiring harness or the ECU driver itself has failed.

   Preparation

   Turn off the machine, disconnect the negative battery terminal, and allow the SCR/DEF system to complete its purge cycle (do not disconnect lines while the system is pressurized or purging).

   Disconnect Electricals

   Locate the DEF return line (routing from the DEF metering module back to the DEF tank) and unplug its integrated heater electrical connector.

   Remove the Return Line

   Disconnect the AdBlue/DEF return line from the metering module and the tank.

   Protect the System

   Ensure that the open ends of the metering module and tank ports are immediately and well blocked to prevent dirt, debris, or crystallization from entering the sensitive DEF system.

   Install New Part

   Route the new heated DEF return line. Ensure it is secured with zip-ties or P-clips away from sharp edges and high-heat exhaust components to prevent future harness chafing.

   Reconnection

   Remove the protective blocks, connect the fluid fittings until they click/lock, and plug in the electrical connector.

   Clear and Test

   Reconnect the battery, clear the fault code 17937 (F-522003-31) via the diagnostic service tool, and run an aftertreatment system test to verify the heater driver operates normally without shorting.
