Case IH 17942 (F-519044-14) - ECU – Engine Control Unit (ECU): DEF/AdBlue dosing valve urea deposit accumulation at low temperature

Issue description

DEF crystallizes and builds up inside the dosing valve (injector) or its supply lines, restricting the flow of DEF into the exhaust stream. This is typically caused by operating in freezing temperatures where the DEF heater fails to thaw the fluid, or when the machine sits idle for extended periods, allowing the urea to dry and crystallize.

Check the cause

  1. Visually inspect the DEF dosing valve, nozzle, and supply lines for white, crusty urea buildup

  2. Check the DEF heater system, including the tank heater control valve and coolant hose routing, to ensure it is thawing the fluid

  3. Check the DEF filter for blockages that can mimic dosing valve flow issues

  4. Verify DEF fluid quality to ensure correct concentration and no contamination

Repair steps

  1. Thaw the System

    If operating in freezing conditions, allow the machine's internal tank heater to thaw the DEF. Note that the ECU will limit engine torque to 60% during this warmup period to protect the dosing module from overheating.

  2. Remove the Dosing Valve

    Disconnect the electrical harness and DEF supply lines from the dosing valve, then unbolt it from the exhaust stream.

  3. Clean the Valve and Lines

    Use warm water or an OEM-approved AdBlue system cleaning kit to flush the dosing lines, the supply module, and the sensor unit to dissolve urea deposits.

  4. Replace if Necessary

    If cleaning does not restore proper flow, or if the injector is mechanically/electrically damaged, the DEF doser injector must be replaced.

  5. Reassemble and Test

    Install the cleaned or new dosing valve. Using a dealer laptop or diagnostic service tool, clear the fault codes.

  6. Run a Dosing Test

    Perform a manual 'Nozzle Test' and 'Fitting Test' via the diagnostic tool to verify the spray pattern, confirm proper system pressure, and ensure there are no leaks at the clamps or pipes.
