Case IH 17979 – Instrument Cluster (Service Display) / ECM: Engine rating not supported.
Issue description
This condition occurs when the engine power rating (software configuration) broadcasted by the engine management system is not recognized, supported, or authorized by the tractor's display/cab control system. It is often grouped with anti-tampering checksum faults, indicating a configuration mismatch or a communication failure between modules regarding the machine's authorized power level.
Applies to these machines
8 machines- MAXXUM T4E
- VESTRUM CVX
- Farmall 40
- Farmall 45
- Farmall 50
- Farmall 115U
- Farmall 100C
- 16x16 HiSpec transmission vehicles
Check the cause
Check for accompanying active anti-tampering or communication codes on the Service Display, specifically 17980 (no answer from Cluster), 17981 (checksum mismatch), or 17982 (checksum mismatch double value).
Verify recent service history to determine if the ECM or the Instrument Cluster was recently replaced, swapped from another tractor, or flashed with new software.
Inspect the CAN 1 (Main Bus - 250 kbps) wiring harness and pins (specifically Pins C and D on the diagnostic connector circuit) between the ECM and the Instrument Cluster for continuity, shorts, or corrosion.
Connect the CNH Electronic Service Tool (EST) to verify the programmed engine rating in the ECM matches the configuration expected by the Cab Control Module/Instrument Cluster.
Repair steps
Connect Diagnostic Tool
Plug the CNH EST into the tractor's diagnostic connector (Pin A - GND, Pin B - +12V, Pin C - CAN 1 HI, Pin D - CAN 1 LO).
Module Configuration
If the Instrument Cluster or ECM was recently replaced, use the EST to perform the module configuration and anti-tampering alignment. The cluster and ECM must be paired so their checksums match.
Software Flash
If the configuration is lost or corrupted, re-flash the ECM and the Instrument Cluster with the correct, matching software payload for the specific tractor model and engine rating.
Wiring Repair
If the EST cannot communicate with the cluster, repair the CAN bus wiring harness between the ECM and the dash housing.
Cluster Replacement
If the Instrument Cluster has failed internally (cannot store the configuration or communicate on the CAN bus), disconnect the instrument panel wiring plug, remove the mounting screws from the dash housing, and install a replacement cluster. Program the new cluster using the CNH EST.
