Case IH 17981 – Engine Control Module (ECM): Antitampering checksum: checksum mismatch

Issue description

This code indicates a security and software mismatch between the machine's control modules. Specifically, the security checksum data shared between the Engine Control Module (ECM) and the Instrument Cluster (or Cabin Control Module) do not match.

Applies to these machines

  • MAXXUM T4E
  • VESTRUM CVX
  • Farmall 40
  • Farmall 45
  • Farmall 50
  • 16x16 HiSpec vehicles
  • Case Construction Equipment (CE)

Check the cause

  1. Verify Module History: Determine if the ECM, Instrument Cluster, or Cabin Control Module (CCM) was recently replaced, swapped from a donor machine, or flashed with new software. A module swap will immediately trigger this code.

  2. Check for Related Codes: Look for accompanying communication codes, such as 17980 or 17982. If 17980 is present, diagnose the CAN bus communication lines between the ECM and the cluster before assuming a software mismatch.

  3. Battery Voltage: Ensure the machine has stable battery voltage, as voltage drops during module initialization can sometimes interrupt the checksum handshake.

Repair steps

  1. Connect the Diagnostic Tool

Connect the CNH EST laptop to the machine's diagnostic port.

  2. Perform Dataset Registration / Module Programming

Use the EST to perform a dataset registration or re-flash the Engine Control Module (ECM). The antitampering synchronization procedure is automatically performed by the EST software after programming.

  3. The 5-Minute Run Procedure

After the dataset registration is complete, start the engine and let the machine run continuously for at least 5 minutes.

  4. Do Not Key Off

You must not cycle the key OFF and ON before this 5-minute process is complete, or the fault will remain active.

  5. Verify Inactive Status

Once the machine has run for 5 minutes, the 17981 fault code will change from Active to Inactive.

  6. Final Validation

Run the machine for an additional 5 minutes to ensure the antitampering checksum is permanently stored in the modules. Clear the inactive codes using the EST.

Parts you might need

(2)
  • Engine Control Module (ECM)

Hardware Types: EDC17CV41 or EDC17CV49. Exact CNH part numbers vary heavily depending on the specific engine family and must be ordered via the serial number.

  • Instrument Cluster / ADIC (Advanced Display Instrument Cluster)

Exact part number depends on the cab configuration.
