17982

Case IH 17982 – Rear EHR (Electronic Hitch / Hydraulic Remote) Control Unit: Antitampering checksum: checksum mismatch (double value)

Issue description

This is a software and security-related fault indicating that the anti-tampering security checksums between control modules do not match. It points to a data mismatch or loss of synchronization between the tractor's instrument cluster and the hydraulic control modules.

Applies to these machines

  • MAXXUM T4E
  • VESTRUM CVX
  • Farmall 40
  • Farmall 45
  • Farmall 50
  • 16x16 HiSpec Vehicles

Check the cause

  1. Check Module Communication: Verify that the Instrument Cluster is powering on and communicating properly on the CAN bus.

  2. Scan for Related Codes: Look for code 17980 (no answer from Cluster) or 17981 (standard checksum mismatch) to confirm if the issue is a hard communication failure or strictly a software mismatch.

  3. Inspect Wiring: Check the CAN bus wiring harness and connectors between the Rear EHR module and the Instrument Cluster for corrosion, backed-out pins, or damage that could cause data packet loss.

  4. Verify Recent Service History: Determine if the Instrument Cluster, Rear EHR, or Engine ECU was recently replaced or flashed. Installing an unprogrammed or mismatched module will trigger this anti-tampering fault.

Repair steps

  1. Connect Diagnostic Tool

Connect the Case IH Electronic Service Tool (EST) to the tractor's diagnostic port via the protocol adapter.

  2. Retrieve Controller Status

Use the EST to pull the current software versions of the Rear EHR and the Instrument Cluster.

  3. Perform Software Reconfiguration/Flash

If a module was recently replaced, use the EST to properly configure and "pair" the new module to the tractor's network so the anti-tampering checksums synchronize. If no modules were replaced, re-flash the Rear EHR and Instrument Cluster with the latest software update to resolve the checksum mismatch.

  4. Clear Codes

Once the software is synchronized, clear the fault code stack in the Rear EHR (Source Address 0x14).

  5. Cycle Power

Turn the key off, wait for the modules to power down completely, and turn the tractor back on to verify the code 17982 does not return.
