Case IH 18 – Transmission ECM: CREEPER_ENG_SW_HI_ERR
Issue description
Voltage from the Creeper Engage Switch (Creeper Lever Neutral Switch) is too high (above 4.2 volts at ECM connector 2, pin 21). The system defaults to a Fixed Mod priority 47 state, and the ECM is unable to detect the creeper lever's neutral position.
Applies to these machines
11 machines- JXC
- Farmall series
- JX
- JXU series
- TN55
- TN60A
- TN65
- TN70A

- TN85A
- TN95A
Check the cause
Disconnect the battery negative lead before performing continuity checks to prevent accidental shorts.
Back-probe the Transmission ECM at Connector 2, Pin 21 to verify if the voltage is exceeding 4.2 volts.
Inspect the wiring harness between the creeper switch and the ECM for rubbed or melted wire insulation causing a short circuit to a +5V or +12V power source.
Disconnect the creeper switch and use a multimeter to test the switch terminals for an internal short.
If the switch operates correctly and the wiring harness shows no shorts to power, test the Transmission ECM for internal failure.
Repair steps
Park the tractor on a level surface, engage the parking brake, and turn off the engine.
Disconnect the battery negative cable.
Remove the necessary trim or console panels to access the creeper gear selector lever and its base assembly.
Locate the Creeper Engage Switch on the linkage/lever assembly and disconnect its electrical connector.
Repair the wiring or replace the switch based on diagnostic findings.
If the wiring is damaged: Repair the shorted section of the wiring harness using appropriate automotive-grade wire and heat-shrink tubing. If the switch is faulty: Unbolt/unthread the old creeper switch from the selector assembly and install the replacement switch.
Reconnect the electrical harness to the switch.
Reinstall any removed console panels or trim.
Reconnect the battery negative cable.
Turn the ignition on, clear the stored transmission fault codes, and cycle the creeper lever to verify that the ECM can now successfully detect the neutral position without throwing Code 18.
