Case IH 18007 – Armrest Controller (GARU): Multi-function handle - switch error

Issue description

The controller has detected an invalid state, malfunction, or internal short from one of the switches located on the Multi-Function Handle (MFH). This often happens if a switch is stuck in the closed position during power-up or if the internal circuitry of the handle fails.

Applies to these machines

  • Magnum
  • Steiger T4B
  • Magnum Series
  • Steiger Series
  • Quadtrac & Rowtrac Series
  • Puma Series
  • Maxxum Series
  • Optum Series

Check the cause

  1. Inspect the Multi-Function Handle for physically stuck, collapsed, or damaged buttons.

  2. Remove the armrest trim and inspect the wiring harness and connector at the base of the handle for pinched wires, loose pins, or poor grounds.

  3. Check for accompanying voltage codes (e.g., 18008 or 18009) that might indicate a harness issue rather than a switch issue.

  4. Use the Pro700 display or Case IH Electronic Service Tool (EST) to monitor the live status of the MFH switches. Press each button to verify state changes.

Repair steps

  1. Power down machine

Turn off the tractor and disconnect the battery to prevent electrical shorts during the repair.

  2. Disassemble armrest

Remove the right-hand armrest console covers and trim pieces to access the base of the Multi-Function Handle.

  3. Disconnect wiring

Locate and unplug the multi-pin electrical connector linking the MFH to the armrest wiring harness.

  4. Remove faulty handle

Remove the retaining screws or bolts securing the handle assembly to the armrest base, and pull the faulty handle out.

  5. Install new handle

Seat the replacement Multi-Function Handle into the armrest and secure it with the mounting hardware.

  6. Reconnect wiring and trim

Plug in the electrical connector and reinstall all armrest covers.

  7. Test and calibrate

Reconnect the battery. Turn the key on, clear any inactive fault codes, and test all handle functions. Depending on the specific tractor model and transmission, perform a handle calibration via the Pro700 display or EST.
