Case IH 18011 – Armrest: Powershift Throttle Voltage Too High

Issue description

The Armrest control module is receiving a voltage signal from the Powershift hand throttle potentiometer that exceeds the maximum expected threshold. In a typical 5-volt reference sensor circuit, this condition usually points to a short to power on the signal wire, an open ground circuit, or an internal failure of the potentiometer itself.

Applies to these machines

  • Magnum
  • Steiger T4B
  • Puma 165
  • Puma 180
  • Puma 195
  • Puma 210
  • Puma 225 CVX

Check the cause

  1. Disassemble the armrest console and visually inspect the wiring harness and connector for pinched wires, corrosion, or loose pins

  2. Check the ground wire at the throttle potentiometer connector using a multimeter (an open ground will cause the signal voltage to pull high)

  3. Test the signal wire for a short to a higher voltage source, such as the 5V reference or 12V power

  4. Monitor live voltage data of the Powershift throttle while moving the lever; if voltage remains stuck high and wiring tests good, the potentiometer has failed internally

Repair steps

  1. Disconnect battery

Turn off the tractor and disconnect the battery to prevent electrical shorts.

  2. Access throttle assembly

Remove the covers and panels on the armrest console to expose the internal multi-function handle and throttle assemblies.

  3. Disconnect harness

Disconnect the electrical harness from the Powershift throttle potentiometer.

  4. Remove faulty potentiometer

Remove the mounting screws or retaining clips securing the faulty throttle potentiometer to the armrest assembly.

  5. Install new potentiometer

Install the new Powershift throttle potentiometer and secure it in place.

  6. Reconnect harness

Reconnect the electrical harness, ensuring the connector clicks and locks securely.

  7. Reassemble console

    Reassemble the armrest console covers.

  8. Restore power

Reconnect the battery and turn the key on.

  9. Clear codes

Clear the inactive fault codes from the system.

  10. Calibrate throttle

Perform a throttle calibration procedure via the tractor's display monitor so the Armrest controller can learn the minimum and maximum voltage sweep of the new sensor.

Parts you might need

(1)
  • Powershift Throttle Potentiometer / Armrest Throttle Assembly

Ensure ordering for a Powershift transmission (not CVT). Look up specific part number using tractor's exact model and PIN.
