Case IH 18013 – Armrest Control Unit (GARU): Multi-function handle - encoder position error

The control module is receiving an invalid, erratic, or out-of-range signal from the position encoder located inside the Multi-Function Handle (MFH).

   Check the Multi-Function Handle for physical damage, binding, or excessive play that might cause the internal encoder to read incorrectly.

   Inspect the wiring harness and connectors between the Multi-Function Handle and the Armrest Control Unit for loose pins, corrosion, or chafed wires.

   Ensure the tractor's battery voltage is within normal operating range, as low system voltage can cause erratic sensor readings.

   Use the Case IH Electronic Service Tool (EST) or Pro 600/700 display to monitor live data of the MFH encoder while moving the handle through its full range of motion, watching for dropouts, dead spots, or voltage spikes.

   Preparation

   Park the machine on a level surface, turn off the engine, and disconnect the battery to prevent electrical shorts.

   Disassembly

   Remove the retaining screws and carefully pry off the plastic covers on the right-hand armrest console to access the base of the Multi-Function Handle.

   Disconnection

   Locate and disconnect the electrical connector(s) linking the MFH to the armrest wiring harness.

   Removal

   Unbolt the mounting hardware securing the Multi-Function Handle to the armrest frame and remove the faulty handle.

   Installation

   Mount the new Multi-Function Handle assembly into the armrest and secure it with the mounting hardware.

   Reconnection

   Reconnect the electrical harness, ensuring the connector is fully seated and locked.

   Reassembly

   Reinstall the armrest console covers and reconnect the battery.

   Calibration

   Turn on the tractor and use the Pro 600/700 display or the EST to perform a Multi-Function Handle / Transmission calibration. This step is critical, as the Armrest Control Unit must learn the new encoder's center, minimum, and maximum position values to operate correctly.
