Case IH 18016 – Armrest Control Module: Rear hitch draft control potentiometer - voltage too low

Signal voltage returning from the draft control dial/lever to the controller has dropped below the minimum acceptable threshold (typically below 0.2 volts). This condition is generally caused by an open circuit in the signal or 5V reference wire, a short to ground in the signal wire, or a complete internal failure of the potentiometer itself.

   Inspect the wiring harness inside the armrest console for pinched, chafed, or broken wires leading to the draft control dial.

   Unplug the potentiometer and check the connector pins for corrosion, moisture, or pushed-out pins.

   Turn the key to the ON position and use a multimeter to verify that the potentiometer is receiving a 5V reference voltage and has a solid ground.

   Check the signal wire for continuity between the potentiometer connector and the Armrest controller. Test the signal wire for a short to ground.

   Measure the resistance of the potentiometer while slowly turning the draft control dial. The resistance (and resulting voltage) should change smoothly without dropping out or spiking. If it reads open or zero voltage throughout its sweep, the potentiometer is dead.

   Preparation

   Turn off the tractor, remove the key, and disconnect the battery to prevent electrical shorts.

   Access the Component

   Remove the necessary trim panels and retaining screws on the armrest console to access the underside of the hitch control panel.

   Removal

   Locate the draft control potentiometer (usually positioned directly under the draft control dial/slider). Disconnect its electrical connector. Remove the retaining nut (often a 3/8-32 nut) or mounting screws holding the potentiometer to the console bracket.

   Installation

   Insert the new potentiometer into the mounting bracket, ensuring the keyed shaft aligns correctly with the operator dial. Tighten the retaining nut.

   Reassembly

   Reconnect the electrical harness to the new potentiometer. Reassemble the armrest console trim panels.

   Calibration

   Reconnect the battery and power on the tractor. You MUST perform a Hydraulic Lift / EDC Autocalibration procedure via the tractor's Pro700/AFS display (or via the specific sequence for older MX models). This teaches the Armrest controller the new minimum and maximum voltage values for the replacement potentiometer.
