Case IH 18017 – Armrest Control Module: Rear hitch draft control potentiometer - voltage too high.

The control module is receiving a signal voltage from the draft control potentiometer that exceeds the normal operating threshold (typically above 4.8 volts on a 5-volt reference circuit). This condition is almost always caused by an open ground circuit, a short to a higher voltage source (such as the 5V reference or 12V system power), or an internal failure of the potentiometer itself.

   Inspect the wiring harness and connector at the draft control potentiometer (located on the armrest console) for chafed wires, corrosion, or backed-out pins.

   Using a multimeter, verify that the potentiometer is receiving a solid ground. An open ground wire is the most common cause of a 'voltage too high' code.

   Verify the potentiometer is receiving the correct 5V reference from the Armrest controller.

   Check the signal wire for a short to power (either 5V or 12V).

   Test the potentiometer's resistance sweep. If the resistance is out of specification or shows an open circuit internally, the potentiometer is faulty.

   Power Down

   Turn off the ignition and disconnect the battery to prevent electrical spikes during the repair.

   Access the Sensor

   Disassemble the necessary trim on the armrest console to access the rear hitch control dials.

   Disconnect

   Unplug the electrical connector from the faulty draft control potentiometer.

   Remove

   Remove the retaining nut or mounting screws holding the potentiometer to the console bracket and pull the dial/sensor assembly out.

   Install

   Install the new OEM potentiometer into the console and secure the mounting hardware.

   Reconnect

   Plug the electrical connector back into the new sensor and reassemble the armrest trim.

   Restore Power & Calibrate

   Reconnect the battery. Turn the key on and use the tractor's display or an Electronic Service Tool (EST) to clear the inactive 18017 fault code.

   Calibration

   Perform the rear hitch/armrest calibration procedure as outlined in the specific model's service manual so the Armrest controller can learn the minimum and maximum voltage values of the new potentiometer.
