Case IH 18018 – Armrest Controller: Rear hitch height limit potentiometer - voltage too low

The voltage signal returning from the rear hitch height limit dial/potentiometer to the controller has dropped below the acceptable threshold (typically below 0.2 V). This condition is usually caused by a short to ground in the signal wire, an open circuit (broken wire or disconnected plug), or an internal failure of the potentiometer itself.

   Visual Inspection: Inspect the wiring harness and connectors between the rear hitch height limit potentiometer (located on the armrest console) and the Armrest controller. Look for pinched wires, corrosion, or backed-out pins.

   Voltage Supply Check: Disconnect the potentiometer and turn the key ON. Verify that the sensor is receiving a steady 5V reference signal and has a solid ground.

   Signal Wire Continuity: Test the signal wire from the potentiometer connector to the Armrest controller for continuity. Check that the signal wire is not shorted to ground.

   Potentiometer Sweep Test: Using a multimeter set to ohms, test the potentiometer itself. Slowly turn the dial from minimum to maximum height limit. The resistance should change smoothly without any dropouts or dead spots. If it reads an open circuit or drops to zero unexpectedly, the potentiometer is faulty.

   Power Down

   Turn off the tractor and disconnect the battery ground cable to prevent electrical spikes.

   Access the Component

   Carefully disassemble the upper trim of the armrest console to access the rear hitch control dials and potentiometers.

   Disconnect

   Unplug the electrical connector from the rear hitch height limit potentiometer.

   Wiring Repair (If Applicable)

   If your diagnostic checks revealed a short or open wire in the harness, repair the damaged section or replace the connector pins as necessary.

   Replace the Potentiometer

   If the wiring is intact but the potentiometer failed the sweep test, remove the retaining nut or screws holding the dial assembly in place. Remove the faulty potentiometer.

   Installation

   Install the new potentiometer into the armrest housing and secure it. Reconnect the electrical harness.

   Reassembly

   Reassemble the armrest console trim.

   Calibration

   Reconnect the battery. Turn the key ON and clear the inactive fault codes. You will likely need to perform a rear hitch calibration (via the AFS Pro monitor or the Electronic Service Tool) so the Armrest controller can learn the minimum and maximum voltage values of the new potentiometer.
