Case IH 18020 – Armrest Controller (ARM): Rear hitch drop rate potentiometer - voltage too low.

The control module is receiving a signal voltage from the rear hitch drop rate potentiometer that has dropped below the minimum acceptable threshold (typically below 0.2 V). This condition usually points to an open circuit, a short to ground in the sensor wiring, or an internal failure of the potentiometer itself.

   Inspect the wiring harness inside the armrest console for chafing, pinched wires, or disconnected plugs.

   Disconnect the drop rate potentiometer and inspect the connector pins for corrosion, moisture, or pushed-out pins.

   Turn the key ON and check for a 5V reference signal and a good ground at the potentiometer connector. If the 5V reference is missing, the issue is in the wiring harness or the Armrest Controller.

   Test the signal wire for continuity between the potentiometer connector and the Armrest Controller. Check for a short to ground on the signal circuit (which would pull the voltage below 0.2 V).

   Measure the resistance of the potentiometer itself (historical Case IH hitch potentiometers often measure around 10,000 ohms ± 10% across the outer pins). If the resistance is out of specification or shows an open circuit, the potentiometer is faulty.

   Power Down

   Turn off the tractor and disconnect the negative battery cable to prevent electrical shorts.

   Access the Armrest

   Remove the retaining screws and carefully lift the cover of the armrest control console to access the underside of the hitch control panel.

   Remove the Potentiometer

   Locate the rear hitch drop rate control knob. Disconnect its electrical harness. Remove the retaining nut or mounting screws holding the potentiometer to the console housing.

   Install the New Part

   Insert the new potentiometer, secure it to the console, and reattach the control knob.

   Reconnect Wiring

   Plug the electrical connector back into the new potentiometer.

   Reassemble

   Carefully reinstall the armrest console cover, ensuring no wires are pinched in the process.

   Clear Codes and Calibrate

   Reconnect the battery. Turn the key ON and use the Electronic Service Tool (EST) or the tractor's diagnostic display to clear the 18020 fault code. Depending on the tractor model, you may need to perform a hitch calibration routine so the Armrest Controller can learn the new potentiometer's minimum and maximum voltage values.
