Case IH 18021 – Armrest Controller: Rear hitch drop rate potentiometer - voltage too high.

The signal voltage returning from the rear hitch drop rate adjustment dial (potentiometer) is exceeding the maximum expected threshold (above 4.8 V on a standard 5 V reference circuit). This typically indicates an open ground circuit, a short to power, or an internal failure of the potentiometer.

   Visually inspect the armrest console wiring harness leading to the hitch drop rate dial for rubbed wires, pinched harnesses, or loose connector pins.

   Perform a voltage and ground test by back-probing the potentiometer connector with the key ON. Verify the reference voltage is exactly 5.0V and the ground pin has continuity to the controller ground (an open ground is the most common cause).

   Conduct a component resistance test by disconnecting the potentiometer and measuring its resistance across the outer pins. Turn the dial and ensure the resistance on the center signal pin changes smoothly without dropping out or spiking.

   Perform a swap test by exchanging the drop rate potentiometer with an identical adjacent potentiometer on the armrest. If the fault code changes to match the new circuit, the potentiometer has failed internally.

   Power Down

   Turn off the tractor and disconnect the battery to prevent shorting sensitive armrest electronics.

   Access the Armrest

   Remove the retaining screws on the right-hand armrest control console to lift the cover plate, exposing the hitch and remote valve controls underneath.

   Remove the Potentiometer

   Locate the specific potentiometer under the "Drop Rate" dial. Disconnect its 3-pin electrical connector.

   Dismount

   Remove the retaining nut or mounting screws securing the potentiometer to the dial/bracket assembly and pull the sensor out.

   Install New Part

   Insert the replacement potentiometer, secure it with the retaining hardware, and reconnect the wiring harness.

   Reassemble

   Carefully reinstall the armrest cover, ensuring no wires are pinched under the plastic housing.

   Calibration

   Reconnect the battery and turn the key ON. You must calibrate the new potentiometer so the Armrest Controller learns the new minimum and maximum voltage sweeps. This is done via the tractor's A-post display (HH menu / calibration mode) or by using the CNH Electronic Service Tool (EST) laptop.
