Case IH 18035 – Armrest Controller: Front hitch position height limit potentiometer - voltage too high

The control module is receiving a voltage signal from the front hitch height limit potentiometer that exceeds the normal operating range (typically above 4.5V or 4.75V on a 5V reference circuit). This condition is usually caused by a short to power in the signal wire, an open ground circuit to the potentiometer, or an internal failure of the potentiometer itself.

   Visual Inspection: Remove the armrest cover and inspect the wiring harness connecting the front hitch potentiometers to the Armrest ECU. Look for pinched wires, chafing, or loose connector pins.

   Ground Circuit Test: Verify that the potentiometer is receiving a solid ground. An open ground will cause the signal voltage to pull high, triggering this exact code.

   Reference Voltage Test: Check the power supply pin at the potentiometer connector to ensure it is receiving a steady 5V reference from the Armrest ECU.

   Signal Wire Test: Check the signal wire for a short to a 12V power source.

   Component Sweep Test: Using a multimeter, measure the resistance across the potentiometer while turning the dial. If the resistance is open or spikes erratically, the potentiometer has failed internally.

   Power Down

   Turn off the tractor key and disconnect the battery to prevent electrical spikes to the Armrest ECU.

   Access the Armrest

   Remove the retaining screws for the right-hand armrest console cover to expose the internal control boards and potentiometers.

   Remove the Faulty Sensor

   Locate the front hitch position height limit potentiometer. Disconnect its electrical plug.

   Dismount

   Remove the knob from the top of the console, then remove the retaining nut or mounting bracket holding the potentiometer in place.

   Install the New Part

   Insert the replacement potentiometer, secure the retaining nut, and reattach the knob.

   Reconnect

   Plug the wiring harness back into the new potentiometer.

   Reassemble and Calibrate

   Reinstall the armrest cover, reconnect the battery, and turn the key on. Clear the inactive 18035 fault code via the Pro 700 / AFS display. If required by the specific model's service manual, perform an armrest/hitch calibration to teach the ECU the new potentiometer's minimum and maximum voltage values.
