Case IH 18038 – Armrest Controller (ARM): Front hitch position drop rate potentiometer - voltage too high.

Issue description

The control module is receiving a signal voltage from the front hitch drop rate potentiometer that exceeds the normal operating parameters. This condition is typically caused by a short to power (either a 5V reference or 12V source) on the signal circuit, an open ground wire on the sensor circuit, or an internal failure of the potentiometer itself.

Check the cause

  1. Visually inspect the wiring harness and connector at the front hitch drop rate potentiometer for pinched wires, corrosion, or pushed-out pins.

  2. Perform a ground circuit test to verify continuity between the potentiometer connector and the Armrest Controller (an open ground defaults the signal high).

  3. Perform a short-to-power test by probing the signal wire with the sensor unplugged and key ON to check for unwanted 5V or 12V voltage.

  4. Test the potentiometer resistance across the reference and ground pins (Pins A to C), which should read around 10,000 ohms (± 10%), and check for a smooth resistance change on the signal pin as the dial is turned.

Repair steps

  1. Disconnect Power

    Turn off the tractor and disconnect the battery to prevent electrical spikes.

  2. Access the Component

    Disassemble the necessary trim panels on the armrest console to access the underside of the hitch control panel.

  3. Disconnect the Sensor

    Unplug the 3-pin electrical connector from the front hitch drop rate potentiometer.

  4. Repair Wiring (If Applicable)

    If the diagnostic tests revealed an open ground or a short to power in the harness, repair the damaged section of the wiring and replace the connector pins if necessary.

  5. Replace the Potentiometer

    If the wiring tests good, the potentiometer has failed internally. Remove the retaining nut or mounting screws holding the potentiometer to the armrest panel and install the new unit.

  6. Reassemble and Power Up

    Reconnect the electrical connector, reassemble the armrest console, and reconnect the battery.

  7. Calibration

    Turn the key ON and clear the inactive fault codes. You must perform the hitch drop rate potentiometer calibration via the tractor's display monitor so the Armrest Controller can learn the minimum and maximum voltage values of the new sensor.
