Case IH 18039 – Armrest Controller (ARM): Front hitch position drop rate potentiometer - voltage too low

The control module is receiving a voltage signal from the front hitch drop rate potentiometer that falls below the minimum acceptable threshold. This condition typically indicates an open circuit in the signal or 5V reference wire, a short to ground in the wiring harness, or an internal failure (dead spot or broken track) within the potentiometer itself.

   Inspect the wiring harness between the Armrest Controller and the front hitch drop rate potentiometer for chafing, pinched wires, or exposed copper that could cause a short to ground.

   Disconnect the potentiometer in the armrest console and check the connector pins for corrosion, moisture, or pushed-out pins.

   With the key in the ON position, use a multimeter to measure the reference voltage at the harness connector. The Armrest Controller should supply a steady 5V reference. If missing, the issue is in the harness or controller.

   Measure the resistance across the potentiometer's pins (typically 10,000 ohm / 10kΩ). Sweep the dial slowly; the resistance should change smoothly without dropping out to an open circuit.

   Turn off the tractor, remove the key, and disconnect the negative battery cable to prevent electrical spikes.

   Carefully remove the trim panels on the armrest control console to access the underside of the Electronic Hitch Control (EHR) panel.

   Locate the front hitch drop rate potentiometer and disconnect its electrical harness connector.

   Pull off the external control knob from the top of the console.

   Remove the retaining nut or mounting screws securing the potentiometer to the armrest housing and pull the old unit out.

   Insert the new potentiometer, secure it with the retaining hardware, and press the control knob back onto the shaft.

   Reconnect the electrical harness and reassemble the armrest console trim.

   Reconnect the battery.

   Calibration: Turn the key ON and use the Pro 700 / AFS display (or dealer EST tool) to perform an armrest/hitch potentiometer calibration.

   The Armrest Controller must learn the minimum and maximum voltage values of the new potentiometer to function correctly and clear the code.
