18042

Case IH 18042 – Armrest Controller: EHR (remote valve) 2 lever position - voltage too low

Issue description

This code indicates that the voltage signal coming from the potentiometer inside the Electronic Hitch/Hydraulic Remote (EHR) lever #2 is falling below the acceptable minimum threshold. This condition is typically caused by a failed potentiometer inside the lever assembly, an open circuit in the wiring, or a short to ground. When this happens, the tractor may disable the #2 remote valve, or the valve may fail to hold pressure or return to neutral properly.

Applies to these machines

  • Magnum
  • Steiger T4B
  • Case IH Magnum Series
  • Case IH Steiger & Quadtrac Series
  • Case IH Puma Series
  • Case IH Maxxum Series

Check the cause

  1. Check the physical movement of the #2 remote valve lever to ensure it moves smoothly and springs back to the exact center (neutral) position without sticking.

  2. Lift the armrest console and inspect the wiring harness connecting the #2 lever to the Armrest Controller for pinched wires, loose connector pins, or corrosion that could cause a voltage drop.

  3. Attempt to recalibrate the EHR levers via the tractor's display (Pro 700 or A-post monitor). If the monitor shows the lever in the 'lower' position when it is physically in 'neutral,' the potentiometer has failed.

  4. Consult a Case IH dealer to see if an Armrest Controller software update is available for your specific serial number to widen the neutral deadband.

Repair steps

  1. Preparation

Turn off the tractor, remove the key, and disconnect the battery to prevent electrical shorts.

  2. Access the Levers

Remove the retaining screws holding the top cover of the armrest control console. Carefully lift the cover to expose the remote valve lever modules.

  3. Removal

Locate the #2 EHR lever assembly. Disconnect its electrical wiring harness connector. Unbolt the faulty lever assembly from the armrest mounting bracket and remove it.

  4. Installation

Seat the new lever assembly into the bracket and secure it with the mounting bolts. Reconnect the electrical harness connector.

  5. Reassembly

Carefully reinstall the armrest console cover and tighten the retaining screws. Reconnect the battery.

  6. Calibration

Turn the key to the ON position. You must perform the EHR hydraulic calibration procedure using the in-cab display so the Armrest Controller can learn the new potentiometer's specific voltage limits for the extend, retract, and neutral positions.
