Case IH 18044 – Armrest Controller: EHR (remote valve) 3 lever position - voltage too low
Issue description
This code indicates that the voltage signal coming from the position sensor (potentiometer) of the #3 Electro-Hydraulic Remote (EHR) lever is falling below the acceptable minimum threshold. This typically points to an open circuit, a short to ground in the wiring, or a failed potentiometer inside the lever assembly.

- Steiger T4B
- Case IH Magnum
- Case IH Steiger
- Case IH Quadtrac
- Case IH Puma
- Case IH Maxxum
Check the cause
Visual Inspection: Remove the armrest cover and inspect the wiring harness connecting the #3 EHR lever to the Armrest Controller. Look for chafed wires, pinched harnesses, or loose connections.
Connector Check: Ensure the connectors are fully seated, not damaged, and that the pins are in the correct position with a tight fit.
Circuit Testing: Use a multimeter to check for an open circuit or a short to ground on the signal wire between the lever and the controller. Verify that the lever is receiving its 5V reference voltage and has a good ground.
Component Isolation (Swap Test): Swap the electrical connection of the #3 EHR lever with an adjacent lever (such as #2 or #4). If the fault code changes to the new lever's circuit, the #3 lever potentiometer is internally failed and must be replaced. If the fault code remains 18044, the issue is in the wiring harness or the Armrest Controller itself.
Repair steps
Power Down
Turn off the tractor and disconnect the battery to prevent electrical spikes.
Access the Armrest
Remove the retaining screws on the MultiControl Armrest console to lift the top cover and access the EHR lever block.
Remove the Faulty Lever
Disconnect the wiring harness connector from the #3 EHR lever. Unbolt the specific lever module or rocker switch from the lever panel.
Install the New Part
Seat the new EHR lever/switch into the panel, secure the retaining screws, and plug in the wiring harness.
Reassemble
Reinstall the armrest cover and reconnect the battery.
Calibration
Perform a remote valve / armrest calibration using the tractor's display monitor or the Electronic Service Tool (EST). This allows the Armrest Controller to learn the specific neutral, extend, and retract voltage limits of the new potentiometer.
