18052

Case IH 18052 – Armrest Controller Module (ACM): Joystick 1 Y-axis position - voltage too high

Issue description

The signal voltage returning from the Y-axis sensor on Joystick 1 has exceeded the maximum allowable threshold programmed into the controller. This condition is typically caused by a short to power (12V or 5V reference) on the signal wire, an open ground circuit to the joystick, or an internal hardware failure of the joystick's sensor.

Applies to these machines

  • Magnum
  • Steiger T4B
  • Magnum Series
  • Steiger Series
  • Puma Series
  • CVX Series
  • Maxxum Series
  • Optum Series

Check the cause

  1. Visually inspect the multi-pin connector at the base of the joystick for backed-out pins, corrosion, or moisture.

  2. Test the ground circuit to the joystick; an open ground will cause the sensor's signal voltage to float to the 5V reference maximum.

  3. Check the Y-axis signal wire for continuity to the Armrest Controller Module (ACM) and ensure it is not shorted to a power source.

  4. Monitor live voltage of 'Joystick 1 Y-axis position' using the Case IH EST or Pro700/AFS display. If voltage reads near 5.0V in neutral and wiring tests good, the joystick has failed internally.

Repair steps

  1. Power Down

Turn off the tractor and disconnect the battery to prevent electrical spikes.

  2. Disassembly

Remove the armrest cover/pod tray to access the joystick mounting bracket.

  3. Removal

Disconnect the OEM multi-pin CNH plug from the bottom of the joystick. Remove the retaining screws (often #8-32 self-tapping screws) securing the joystick to the armrest console.

  4. Installation

Seat the new joystick assembly into the armrest and secure it with the mounting screws. Reconnect the multi-pin electrical connector.

  5. Reassembly

Reinstall the armrest cover/tray and reconnect the tractor's battery.

  6. Calibration

Perform an SCV/Joystick calibration using the Case IH EST software or the in-cab display so the Armrest Controller Module can learn the new minimum, maximum, and neutral center voltage values for the X and Y axes.
