Case IH 18054 – Armrest Control Module (ACM): Joystick 1 proportional rocker switch - voltage too high
Issue description
The control module is receiving a voltage signal from the proportional rocker switch on Joystick 1 that exceeds the maximum expected threshold (typically above 4.5V). This is usually caused by a short to power (either 5V reference or 12V battery power) in the wiring harness, a loss of sensor ground, or an internal failure of the rocker switch's potentiometer/Hall effect sensor.
Applies to these machines
4 machines- Magnum
- Steiger
- Puma
- Maxxum
Check the cause
Inspect the wiring harness running from Joystick 1 down through the armrest console. Look for chafed wires, pinched harnesses, or damaged connectors that could cause a short to power.
Disconnect the electrical connector at the joystick. Turn the key ON and use a multimeter to measure the voltage on the signal wire on the harness side. If the voltage remains high (e.g., 5V or 12V) with the joystick unplugged, the wiring harness has a short to power that must be repaired.
Verify that the joystick is receiving a clean 5V reference voltage and a solid ground from the Armrest Control Module. A broken ground wire will cause the signal voltage to default high.
If the wiring, reference voltage, and ground all test good, the internal proportional rocker switch on the joystick has failed and the unit must be replaced.
Repair steps
Power down
Turn off the tractor and disconnect the battery to prevent electrical spikes to the Armrest Control Module.
Disassemble armrest
Remove the plastic trim and cover panels on the armrest console to access the base of the Multi-Function Handle/Joystick.
Remove the joystick
Disconnect the main electrical connector for the joystick. Remove the mounting screws or bolts securing the joystick assembly to the armrest tray.
Install new part
Mount the replacement joystick assembly and secure the hardware. Reconnect the electrical plug.
Reassemble
Reinstall the armrest trim panels and reconnect the tractor's battery.
Calibrate joystick
Use the tractor's Pro 700/1200 display monitor or the Case IH Electronic Service Tool (EST) to clear the inactive 18054 fault code and perform a Joystick Calibration. This teaches the ACM the new minimum, maximum, and center-detent voltage values of the new proportional rocker switch.
