Case IH 1808 – ENGINE: Aftertreatment Burner Glow Voltage High
Issue description
The engine control system has detected that the voltage on the circuit for the Diesel Particulate Filter (DPF) burner glow plug is higher than the expected maximum threshold. This typically indicates a short to power in the wiring harness, a stuck-closed burner relay, or an internal failure of the burner glow plug itself.

Check the cause
Check the DPF burner relay to see if the contacts are stuck closed, which would constantly send high voltage to the glow plug.
Inspect the wiring harness from the ECU to the burner relay, and from the relay to the DPF burner glow plug, looking for chafed wires causing a short to a power source.
Test the burner glow plug by disconnecting the electrical connector and measuring its resistance with a multimeter (an open circuit or a dead short indicates a failed plug).
Check ECU pins and engine controller harness connectors for water intrusion, bent pins, or corrosion that could be bridging a power circuit to the glow plug monitor circuit.
Repair steps
Disconnect Power
Turn off the machine and disconnect the negative battery cable to prevent electrical shorts during repair.
Replace the Relay
If diagnostic testing revealed a stuck DPF burner relay, pull the old relay from the fuse/relay block and install a new OEM relay.
Repair Wiring
If a short to power was found in the harness, repair the damaged wire using heat-shrink butt connectors and re-loom the harness to protect it from future chafing.
Replace the DPF Burner Glow Plug
Locate the burner assembly on the DPF exhaust aftertreatment unit. Disconnect the electrical connector to the burner glow plug. Carefully unthread the burner glow plug from the burner housing (use penetrating oil if the exhaust components are seized). Thread in the new burner glow plug and torque to OEM specifications. Reconnect the electrical harness.
Reassemble and Test
Reconnect the battery. Use an electronic service tool (EST) to clear the 1808 fault code.
Force a Manual Regeneration
Initiate a manual/parked DPF regeneration to verify that the burner ignites properly and the ECU reads the correct voltage on the glow plug circuit without throwing the code again.
