Case IH 1809 – Engine Controller (ECU): ISM-IDI Aftertreatment Burner Glow Voltage Out Of Range High
Issue description
The engine control system has detected that the voltage on the aftertreatment burner glow plug circuit is exceeding the maximum expected threshold. This typically indicates a short to power in the wiring harness, a failed glow plug relay/resistor, or an internal fault within the glow plug itself causing abnormal resistance.

Check the cause
Inspect the DOC/DPF burner assembly wiring for melted wires, chafing, or corrosion at the burner glow plug connector (X-9023)
Test the Burner Glow Plug Relay (K-9107) and the Burner Glow Plug Resistor (R-9001) for internal shorts that could send unregulated voltage to the glow plug
Disconnect the glow plug and use a multimeter to check the harness side for a short to power
Check the pins at the Engine Controller (ECU) for moisture or pushed-out pins
Connect the EST / ISM diagnostic software to monitor live voltage data on the burner glow plug circuit
Repair steps
Power Down
Turn off the machine and disconnect the negative battery cable.
Access the DPF Burner
Locate the DOC/DPF assembly in the engine bay. The burner assembly is mounted directly to the exhaust housing and includes the glow plug, two burner injectors, and a chamber temperature sensor.
Disconnect Components
Unplug the burner glow plug connector (X-9023).
Replace Faulty Component
If the harness showed a short to power during diagnostics, repair the damaged section of the wiring harness. If the relay (K-9107) is stuck closed, replace the relay. If the glow plug itself is internally shorted, unthread the glow plug from the burner chamber and install a new one.
Reassembly
Thread the new glow plug into the burner housing and torque to OEM specifications. Reconnect connector X-9023.
System Reset
Reconnect the battery. Connect the EST / ISM diagnostic software, clear the fault codes, and follow the software prompts to reset the ECU data regarding the DPF. Run a manual regeneration to verify the burner ignites properly without throwing the 1809 code.
