Case IH 1819 – Engine Control Unit (ECU) / Engine Controller: ISM-IDI Engine overspeed
Issue description
The engine RPM has exceeded the maximum safe operational limit programmed into the controller. This can be caused by an actual mechanical overspeed event (e.g., operating on a steep downgrade, excessive starting fluid use) or a false reading caused by a failing speed sensor.

Check the cause
Verify if the machine was recently operated in a manner that could mechanically force an overspeed (e.g., coasting down a steep hill under heavy load or using combustible gases/ether in the intake)
Check for related code 3266, which indicates a Crank Speed Sensor or Camshaft Speed Sensor Failure
Check both the Crankshaft and Camshaft speed sensors for erratic signals
Inspect the wiring harness and connectors leading to the speed sensors for shorts to ground, open circuits, or corrosion
Verify the engine ECU battery supply voltage, as voltage spikes can cause erratic sensor behavior
Repair steps
Connect Diagnostic Tool
Connect the Case IH Electronic Service Tool (EST) to read the freeze-frame data. Look at the exact RPM recorded when code 1819 was logged.
Clear and Retest
If the data shows a legitimate overspeed caused by operator error, clear the code, restart the engine, and test operate the machine to ensure no permanent damage occurred.
Test Sensors
If the RPM data is implausible (e.g., spiking erratically), use a multimeter to test the resistance and voltage of the Crankshaft and Camshaft speed sensors.
Inspect Signal Wheels
Check the sensor air gaps and inspect the camshaft and crankshaft signal wheels (gears) for damage or debris.
Replace Faulty Components
Replace the faulty speed sensor or repair the damaged section of the wiring harness.
Restore Parameters
Clear the fault codes using the EST. If the Engine Controller itself had to be replaced due to an internal short, follow the appropriate service tool procedure to restore self-learning parameters.
