Case IH 1823 – Engine Control Module (ECM): ISM-IDI Camshaft Speed Sensor Low Voltage

Issue description

The Engine Control Module (ECM) is receiving a voltage signal from the camshaft speed/position sensor that has fallen below the minimum expected operational threshold. This typically indicates a short to ground in the sensor wiring, a failed sensor, or a poor connection preventing the 5V reference signal from returning properly.

Check the cause

  1. Verify the machine's overall battery and system voltage, as low battery voltage can trigger false sensor low-voltage codes.

  2. Visually inspect the camshaft speed sensor wiring harness for chafing, rodent damage, or melting.

  3. Disconnect the sensor and inspect the connector pins for corrosion, moisture intrusion, or pushed-back pins.

  4. With the ignition key ON and the engine OFF, backprobe the sensor connector to verify it is receiving the proper reference voltage (typically 5V) from the ECM.

  5. Check the signal wire for continuity to ground. If there is continuity to ground when disconnected from the ECM, the wiring harness has a short circuit that must be repaired.

Repair steps

  1. Prep the Machine

    Park the machine on a level surface, lower any loader arms (or secure them with safety struts), turn off the ignition, and disconnect the negative battery cable.

  2. Locate the Sensor

    Find the camshaft position sensor on the upper engine block, cylinder head, or timing cover (exact location varies slightly by engine model). You may need to remove the air filter housing or engine covers for access.

  3. Disconnect the Harness

    Press the release tab on the electrical connector and pull it free from the sensor.

  4. Remove the Sensor

    Remove the retaining bolt (usually requiring a 10mm socket). Gently twist and pull the sensor out of its bore.

  5. Inspect the Bore

    Check the mounting hole for heavy oil sludge or metal shavings, which could indicate deeper mechanical issues. Wipe the mounting surface clean.

  6. Install the New Sensor

    Apply a small amount of clean engine oil to the O-ring of the new sensor. Push it straight into the bore until seated, then install and tighten the retaining bolt.

  7. Reconnect

    Plug the electrical connector back in until it clicks. Reconnect the negative battery cable.

  8. Clear Codes

    Use a diagnostic tool (like the Case EST or Jaltest) to clear the inactive 1823 fault code from the ECM's memory, then run the engine to verify the code does not return.
