Case IH 1824 – Engine Control Unit (ECU) / Engine Controller: ISM-IDI Diesel Particulate Filter High Soot Load

The Engine Control Module has detected that the Diesel Particulate Filter (DPF) has accumulated soot beyond the normal operational limits. This triggers a Red master warning lamp and may cause the machine to enter a derated state (reduced engine power).

   Check for upstream engine faults by scanning for other active codes (e.g., leaking fuel injectors, turbocharger issues, or EGR system faults) that can cause excessive soot production.

   Inspect the DPF Differential Pressure Sensor (Delta-P Sensor) and its pressure tubes for blockages, water intrusion, or cracked lines which can cause false high-soot readings.

   Check Exhaust Gas Temperature (EGT) sensors to ensure they are functioning properly, as faulty sensors will block the regeneration process.

   Inspect air and fuel filters to ensure they are clean and replaced on schedule, as restrictions can cause rich running conditions and heavy soot.

   Attempt a Parked/Forced Regeneration

   If the soot load is high but has not crossed the critical lockout threshold, park the machine in a safe, well-ventilated area away from combustible materials. Initiate a manual/parked regeneration using the in-cab regen button or a diagnostic scan tool.

   Perform a Service Regeneration

   If the soot load has exceeded critical limits (e.g., above 120% or 140%), the ECU will lock out standard regeneration to prevent a thermal event. You must connect the Electronic Service Tool (EST) to command a controlled 'Service Regeneration'.

   Remove and Clean/Replace the DPF

   If the Service Regeneration fails, or if the filter is permanently restricted by incombustible ash (which cannot be burned off), the DPF must be removed. Send the unit out for professional off-vehicle thermal/ash cleaning, or replace it with a new/remanufactured DPF.

   Reset ECU Parameters

   If the DPF is cleaned or replaced, use the diagnostic scan tool to reset the DPF soot load parameters and self-learning timers in the Engine Controller so the ECU knows the filter is empty.
