Case IH 18262 (518595.13, 518738.03, 518738.04) - ACML – ACML: Front Hitch Height Limit Potentiometer Error State

The front hitch height limit potentiometer signal is out of the expected calibration range (inconsistency), shorted to ground (voltage too low), or shorted to a 5V/12V power source (voltage too high). The controller cannot accurately determine the front hitch's position and will typically disable front hitch operation.

   Visual Inspection: Inspect the front hitch height limit potentiometer, its mechanical linkage, and the wiring harness for physical damage, corrosion, or disconnected pins.

   Voltage/Resistance Test: Check the voltage signal from the potentiometer using a multimeter. A properly functioning Case IH potentiometer typically sweeps between approximately 0.5V (fully retracted) and 4.5V (fully extended).

   If the voltage is stuck below 0.5V, suspect a short to ground or a failed sensor.

   If the voltage is stuck above 4.5V, suspect a short to power or a failed sensor.

   Hitch Calibration Check: Verify if the hitch calibration has simply been lost. Sometimes an inconsistency error requires a recalibration procedure rather than a parts replacement.

   Power Down

   Turn off the tractor, lower the front hitch to the ground (if possible) to relieve hydraulic pressure, and disconnect the battery.

   Access the Sensor

   Locate the front hitch height limit potentiometer on the front hitch assembly (typically mounted near the pivot point of the lift arms).

   Wiring Repair

   If the diagnostic checks revealed a broken wire or corroded connector, repair the wiring harness or replace the connector pigtail.

   Replace Potentiometer

   If the sensor itself failed the voltage sweep test, unbolt the defective potentiometer and disconnect it from the mechanical linkage. Install the new potentiometer and secure the linkage.

   Reassembly

   Reconnect the wiring harness and the tractor's battery.

   Calibration

   Turn on the tractor and access the diagnostic/settings menu on the cab display. You must perform the Front Hitch Calibration Procedure so the ACML can learn the new potentiometer's minimum and maximum voltage limits.
