18317 (4162.02, 4162.03, 4162.04, 517827.07) - ACML

Case IH 18317 (4162.02, 4162.03, 4162.04, 517827.07) - ACML – ACML: FWD Manual Switch ACML - error state

Issue description

The control module is detecting an invalid signal from the Front Wheel Drive (FWD / MFWD) Manual Switch. The controller cannot determine if the operator is commanding the Front Wheel Drive to be ON or OFF because the electrical circuit is compromised.

Applies to these machines

  • MAXXUM T4E
  • VESTRUM CVX
  • Case IH Magnum Series
  • Case IH Steiger Series
  • Case IH Puma Series
  • Case IH Maxxum Series
  • Case IH Optum Series

Check the cause

  1. Physically inspect the FWD switch on the armrest console to see if it is broken, sticking, or failing to return to its neutral/off position.

  2. Use the tractor's AFS Pro 700 monitor or a dealer electronic service tool to view live data for the ACML. Toggle the FWD switch and observe if the state changes; if it reads 'Error' or does not change, the issue is isolated to the switch or immediate wiring.

  3. Remove the armrest panel to access the back of the switch. Disconnect the switch and inspect the connector for pushed pins, corrosion, or moisture.

  4. Use a multimeter to test the FWD switch for continuity across its terminals when toggled. Lack of proper continuity indicates internal failure.

  5. Check for related secondary transmission or FWD solenoid codes (e.g., 6021, 6022, 6023) which might indicate a broader circuit issue.

Repair steps

  1. Power Down

Turn off the tractor and disconnect the battery to prevent electrical shorts during repair.

  2. Access the Switch

Carefully pry up or unscrew the control panel cover on the right-hand armrest console to expose the underside of the switches.

  3. Remove the FWD Switch

Disconnect the electrical wiring harness from the FWD switch. Depress the retaining tabs on the sides of the switch body and push it up through the top of the armrest bezel.

  4. Install New Switch

Snap the new OEM FWD switch into the armrest bezel until it clicks into place.

  5. Reconnect

Plug the electrical harness back into the switch, ensuring the locking tab engages securely.

  6. Reassemble

Reinstall the armrest control panel cover.

  7. Clear Codes and Test

Reconnect the battery, turn the key to the ON position, and use the AFS monitor or diagnostic tool to clear the 18317 fault code. Start the tractor and manually engage/disengage the FWD switch to verify the system operates without throwing an error.
