Case IH 18359 (2661.03, 2661.04) - ACML – ACML: Joystick Y-Axis Position Sensor Error
Issue description
Fault code 18359 (often displayed alongside SPN 2661 FMI 03 or 04) indicates an error state with the Joystick Y-Axis Position sensor. 2661.03 indicates the Y-axis sensor circuit is Short to Power. 2661.04 indicates the Y-axis sensor circuit is Open or Short to Ground.
Applies to these machines
8 machines- MAXXUM T4E
- VESTRUM CVX
- Puma Series
- Maxxum Series
- Magnum Series
- Steiger Series
- Optum Series
- CVX / CVXDrive Series
Check the cause
Physical Inspection: Check the joystick physically to ensure it is not binding, obstructed by debris, or failing to spring back to the exact neutral position.
Live Data Verification: Access the tractor's diagnostic menu to view the live input voltage for the Joystick Y-axis. Observe if the voltage is stuck at 0V (indicating an open/short to ground) or maxed out at 5V/12V (indicating a short to power).
Harness Testing: Remove the armrest cover and inspect the wiring harness connecting the joystick to the ACML. Test for continuity and check for pinched wires, corroded pins, or loose connectors.
Repair steps
Disconnect Power
Turn off the tractor and disconnect the battery to prevent electrical spikes.
Access the ACML
Remove the retaining screws on the armrest console to expose the joystick assembly and the Armrest Control Module.
Repair Wiring
If the diagnostic checks revealed a broken wire or damaged connector pin between the joystick and the ACML, repair the harness.
Replace the Joystick
If the wiring is intact, the internal Y-axis potentiometer/Hall-effect sensor has failed. Because the sensors are integrated, the joystick assembly must be replaced as a single unit. Disconnect the multi-pin CNH plug, unbolt the joystick base from the armrest mount, and install the new assembly.
Recalibrate
After installing the new joystick, power on the tractor. You must perform a joystick calibration procedure via the tractor's display monitor to teach the ACML the new minimum, maximum, and neutral voltage values for the Y-axis.
