Case IH 18400 – Armrest Control Module (ACM) or ICP (Intuitive Control Panel): EHR 1 Program / Motor Mode Switch ("EHR_Mode_1Sw") Error

Issue description

The CAN signal broadcasted from the ICP regarding the position or state of the EHR 1 switch is missing, out of range, or in a recognized error state. This means the tractor's computer cannot determine the commanded position of the #1 remote valve or hitch program switch.

Applies to these machines

  • VESTRUM CVX
  • Case IH Steiger & Quadtrac Series (e.g., 350, 370, 400, 450, 500, 540, 600, 620)
  • Case IH Magnum Series (e.g., 235–340, CVX)
  • Case IH Puma Series (e.g., 140–240, 150, 160, 170)
  • Case IH Optum Series
  • Case IH Maxxum Series

Check the cause

  1. Verify CAN Communication: Check if other buttons and dials on the ICP are functioning. If multiple switches are unresponsive, the entire ICP may have lost CAN communication or power/ground.

  2. EST Monitoring: Connect the Case IH Electronic Service Tool (EST). Navigate to the Armrest/ICP configurations (e.g., Config B/b 6.7) and monitor the live data for the "EHR 1 motor/program switch". Toggle the switch physically to see if the state changes in the software.

  3. Physical Inspection: Inspect the EHR 1 switch on the armrest for physical damage, sticking, or liquid intrusion (a common issue in open-cab or dirty environments).

  4. Harness Check: Lift the armrest console and inspect the wiring harness connecting the ICP to the main armrest harness for pinched wires, corrosion, or loose connector pins.

Repair steps

  1. Power Down

Turn off the tractor and disconnect the battery to prevent electrical shorts while servicing the armrest CAN bus components.

  2. Access the ICP

Remove the retaining screws on the underside or perimeter of the Multicontroller armrest to lift the top cover and access the Integrated Control Panel.

  3. Isolate the Switch

Locate the EHR 1 switch assembly. Depending on the specific tractor configuration, the EHR switches may be a replaceable sub-assembly (toggle switch block) or integrated directly into the ICP circuit board.

  4. Replace the Component

If the switch is modular, disconnect its sub-harness, unclip it from the bezel, and install the new switch assembly. If the switch is hard-soldered to a failed ICP board, the entire Integrated Control Panel module must be replaced.

  5. Reassembly

Reconnect all CAN bus and power harnesses. Carefully seat the ICP back into the armrest and tighten the retaining screws.

  6. Calibration/Clearing

Reconnect the battery. Use the Case IH EST to clear fault code 18400 from the fault history. Perform a functional test of the EHR 1 remote to ensure the CAN signal is broadcasting correctly and the valve responds.
