Case IH 18407 – ICP: PTO_IntentSw CAN signal from ICP - error state

Issue description

The system is reporting that the CAN signal for the PTO Enable Switch, which is routed through the ICP, is in an error state. This typically means the control network is receiving a corrupted, out-of-range, or missing signal from the switch, preventing the PTO from engaging safely.

Applies to these machines

  • VESTRUM CVX
  • Magnum Series Tractors
  • Puma Series Tractors
  • Maxxum Series Tractors
  • Axial-Flow Combines

Check the cause

  1. Use a diagnostic tool (such as Jaltest or the Case IH AFS Pro display) to read the ECU failure memory and verify if the ICP is communicating properly with the rest of the network.

  2. Check the physical PTO Enable Switch on the armrest or console for mechanical damage or sticking.

  3. Inspect the wiring harness between the PTO switch and the Instrument Cluster Panel (ICP) for chafing, corrosion, or loose pins.

  4. Verify the 5-volt reference circuit and CAN high/low voltages at the ICP connector.

Repair steps

  1. Power down machine

Power down the machine and disconnect the battery to prevent electrical shorts.

  2. Access components

Remove the trim panels to access the rear of the PTO Enable Switch and the ICP.

  3. Test switch continuity

Disconnect the switch and test it for proper continuity across its states (Off/On).

  4. Replace switch

If the switch fails continuity testing, replace the switch.

  5. Test wiring harness

If the switch is functional, perform a pin-to-pin continuity test on the wiring harness between the switch and the ICP. Repair any open or shorted wires.

  6. Reassemble and test

Reconnect all components, restore battery power, and use a diagnostic tool to clear the fault codes and test PTO actuation.
