Case IH 18414 – Cab Controller or Armrest Module: CAN Signal Error from ICP regarding HTS Record Mode Switch

Issue description

The control module is receiving an invalid, missing, or corrupted CAN message from the Instrument Control Panel (ICP) regarding whether the HTS Record switch is being pressed or its current position.

Applies to these machines

  • VESTRUM CVX
  • Magnum
  • Optum
  • Puma
  • Maxxum

Check the cause

  1. Inspect the HTS Record Mode switch on the ICP for physical damage, sticking, or debris lodged around the button.

  2. Check if there are other active fault codes related to the ICP to determine if the issue is the main CAN harness rather than the HTS switch itself.

  3. Use the tractor's instrument cluster diagnostic mode (H menus) to monitor the HTS system switch states and verify if the module is registering any input when the switch is pressed.

  4. Inspect the wiring harness exiting the armrest/ICP for pinch points, chafing, or loose connector pins.

Repair steps

  1. Power Down

Turn off the tractor and disconnect the battery to prevent electrical spikes.

  2. Access the ICP

Remove the retaining screws or trim pieces on the Multicontroller armrest to lift the Instrument Control Panel.

  3. Inspect Connectors

Disconnect the main harness from the bottom of the ICP. Inspect the pins for corrosion, moisture, or spread terminals. Clean with electrical contact cleaner.

  4. Test Harness Continuity

If a wiring issue is suspected, test the continuity of the CAN High and CAN Low wires from the ICP connector to the main cab harness. Repair any breaks.

  5. Replace the ICP

The switches on the ICP are typically integrated into a single sealed circuit board. If the wiring is good and the HTS switch has failed internally, the ICP unit must be replaced.

  6. Reassembly and Calibration

Install the new ICP, reconnect the battery, and power on the tractor. Clear the inactive fault codes and test the HTS record/playback functionality to ensure the system operates correctly.

Parts you might need

(1)
  • Instrument Control Panel (ICP) / Armrest Switch Pad

Exact part number varies heavily depending on the tractor model, year, and specific hydraulic/transmission options equipped on the machine.
