Case IH 18416 – ICP (Instrument Cluster Panel / Instrument Control Panel): Rear Hitch Inching Raise Switch: 'RearHitchRaiseSw' CAN signal from ICP - error state
Issue description
This fault indicates a communication or signal failure involving the rear hitch inching raise switch (the external push-button switch typically located on the rear fender used to raise the 3-point hitch from outside the cab). The system is flagging an 'error state' because the CAN (Controller Area Network) data bus is receiving an invalid, missing, or out-of-range signal from the Instrument Cluster Panel (ICP) regarding this switch.
Applies to these machines
5 machines- VESTRUM CVX
- Puma Series: 125, 165, 180, 195, 210, 225, CVX
- Magnum Series: 225, 235, 250, 280, 310, 340, 380, MX210, MX285
- Maxxum Series: 110-140, 5100 series, MX80C-MX170
- Steiger / Quadtrac Series: 450, 500, 550, 600, 620
Check the cause
Check the EDC Status Lamp: Start the tractor and verify if the EDC status lamp on the ICP flashes to indicate an active EDC fault.
Test In-Cab Controls: Verify if the hitch operates normally using the position control lever on the armrest inside the cab. If it works, the issue is isolated to the fender switch circuit.
Wiring and Connector Check: Inspect the wiring harness and connectors for the rear hitch switches (connector X407 for Left Hand and X661 for Right Hand) for corrosion, moisture, or backed-out pins.
Diagnostic Menu (H Menu): Connect diagnostic tool 380000843 to the diagnostic connector, turn key ON, and navigate to the HH MENU to view live states and verify if the CAN bus is registering the switch press.
Repair steps
Disconnect Power
Turn off the tractor and disconnect the battery to prevent short circuits while working on the CAN bus wiring.
Inspect/Replace the Switch
Remove the rear fender switch housing. Test the switch for continuity when pressed. If the switch is internally shorted or open (a common issue due to weather exposure on the fender), replace the switch unit.
Clear Stored Fault Codes
Reconnect the battery and turn the ignition key ON. Using the diagnostic connector, enter the 'H' menu. Navigate to the HC menu to erase all stored error codes without erasing your hitch calibration information. (Note: Do not use the H8 menu unless you intend to wipe all EEPROM calibration values back to factory defaults).
Recalibrate the Hitch
After clearing the code or replacing the switch, you must reset the hitch limits. Fully raise and then lower the hitch using the position control lever on the armrest. Turn the ignition off to store the calibrated top position value in the module's memory.
