Case IH 1888-05 - UCM – UCM: Front PTO solenoid current low

The control module is commanding the front Power Take-Off (PTO) solenoid to engage, but it is detecting little to no electrical current flowing through the circuit. This is typically caused by a broken wire, a disconnected plug, a blown fuse, or an internally failed (open) solenoid coil.

   Check the 12V power supply to the UCM and the PTO circuit, including the fuse panel for any blown fuses related to the front hitch/PTO.

   Locate the Front PTO solenoid on the front PTO gearbox housing, unplug the connector, and inspect the pins for water ingress, dirt, or heavy corrosion.

   Using a digital multimeter, measure the resistance across the two pins of the Front PTO solenoid. If it reads 'OL' (open loop) or infinite resistance, the internal coil has broken.

   Trace the wiring harness back to the UCM (often sharing a connector with the front hitch lift solenoids) and look for chafed wires, pinch points, or breaks in the loom.

   Power Down

   Turn off the tractor, remove the key, and switch off the battery disconnect to prevent short circuits.

   Locate the Valve

   Identify the Front PTO control valve block, typically mounted directly on or adjacent to the front PTO gearbox/clutch housing.

   Disconnect Wiring

   Unplug the electrical harness from the faulty Front PTO solenoid.

   Remove the Solenoid Coil

   Remove the retaining nut or bolt at the top of the solenoid stem. Slide the faulty electromagnetic coil off the hydraulic valve cartridge. (Note: You usually do not need to open the hydraulic system or remove the valve cartridge itself just to replace the electrical coil).

   Install the New Part

   Slide the new OEM solenoid coil over the valve stem and tighten the retaining nut to the manufacturer's specified torque (do not overtighten, or you may crack the plastic housing).

   Reconnect and Test

   Plug the electrical connector back in. Restore battery power, start the tractor, and use the AFS Pro monitor to clear the UCM fault codes. Engage the front PTO switch to verify the code does not return and the PTO engages smoothly.
