Case IH 1888-06 - UCM – UCM: Front Power Take Off (PTO) Engagement / Front PTO Solenoid - Current High
Issue description
The control module is detecting an abnormally high electrical current draw on the Front PTO solenoid circuit. This is almost always caused by a short circuit to ground in the wiring harness or an internal short within the solenoid coil itself.
Applies to these machines
5 machines- MAGNUM AFS Connect
- Case IH Maxxum Series
- Case IH Puma Series
- Case IH Magnum Series
- Case IH Steiger Series
Check the cause
Disconnect the negative battery terminal before working on the electrical systems to prevent UCM damage.
Inspect the wiring harness leading to the Front PTO solenoid valve for chafed wires, melted insulation, or pinched lines shorting directly to the tractor chassis (ground).
Disconnect the Front PTO solenoid connector and measure the resistance across the solenoid coil pins. A reading of near 0 ohms indicates the coil is internally shorted.
Check the UCM harness connectors for moisture ingress, corrosion, or bent pins that could be bridging the PTO circuit to a ground pin.
Repair steps
Turn off the tractor, apply the parking brake, and disconnect the negative (-) battery terminal, followed by the positive (+) terminal.
Locate the Front PTO solenoid valve assembly at the front of the tractor near the front hitch/PTO clutch housing.
Unplug the electrical connector from the Front PTO solenoid.
If the diagnostic checks revealed a wiring short, repair the damaged section of the harness using heat-shrink tubing and electrical tape, ensuring it is routed away from sharp metal edges.
If the solenoid coil is internally shorted, remove the retaining nut at the top of the solenoid valve stem.
Slide the faulty electromagnetic coil off the valve cartridge.
Slide the new OEM replacement coil onto the valve stem and torque the retaining nut to specification.
Reconnect the electrical connector to the solenoid.
Reconnect the positive battery terminal, then the negative terminal.
Start the tractor and engage the Front PTO switch to verify operation and ensure the 1888-06 code clears from the UCM.
